CHAPTER SEVEN

The next day, Scott walked into his office to find me twirling in his chair. I pulled out a canvas bag, and one by one, I laid out a wedge of French cheese, three macarons, and two warmed-up croissants wrapped up in foil.

I was trying to be playful, but, to tell the truth, I was in a mood. The deep sadness that sometimes came and went was pressing on me hard.

Scott hadn’t noticed yet that I was down. My man was too busy studying the food. He took a bite of croissant and closed his eyes as a look of contentment spread across his face.

“I missed you last night,” I told him in a quiet voice as I leaned back in my chair. “Paris is a place I should have seen with you.”

“Paris? Did you just say…” he asked through a mouth full of croissant. Then understanding seemed to dawn, and his eyes grew wide. “Well, of course you went to Paris! Why would you spend the evening here when the ville des lumières awaits?” He cocked his head to study me. “It’s kind of brilliant, really, to just go…wherever.”

“I think it’s super sexy when you speak French like that,” I told him with a smile. City of lights, indeed; it had been fabulous.

I set a stack of Tupperware beside the food from Paris. “And these tasty morsels are from your murder victim,” I announced. “With deep appreciation for your efforts to lock away the evil fiends who went after her and Alex.”

“Hmm.” He peeked with interest into the containers. “Never had a murder victim bake for me before.” He looked up to study me. “So, she knows about us, I guess.”

“As of last night, she does.” We had talked about it as we strolled the Champs-Élysées.

Marianne had been happy for me—that I had the extra time with Scott, but I had also seen a longing in her eyes, and who could blame her, really?

“If I could speak to Alex one more time…” Her voice had trailed away.

My case, though, was unique. It had shocked even Celeste that I could just continue hanging out with Scott after I was dead. Much consulting with her higher-ups had followed, along with an investigation into the extraordinary portal between worlds at the Yellow House. It turned out Scott and I were meant to work together to rid Colby Pointe of evil—with his investigative brilliance and my paranormal skills.

I fixated now on the dimple in his left cheek and the way his hair fell almost into his eyes as he reached for a cookie. He took a bite and smiled. “I am really liking this particular crime victim.”

“She seems kind of perfect, really. It’s just that…I don’t know.”

He watched me as he chewed. “What are you thinking, Hannah?”

“Well, there was this guy at the club when I popped in yesterday—one of Alex’s best buds. And he kind of indicated that Marianne was…well, that Marianne was not as perfect as most people seem to think.
